Uncontrollable

This past week at a teacher training class, a preschool Sunday school teacher asked for advice on dealing with a child that was physically hurting other children and would not respond to her discipline.

Although you want the children to be there to hear the important truths you’re teaching, the safety of the children comes first. It is important that your church or club have a written policy to deal with these situations. Children who hurt other children should not be allowed to attend. If, after discipline, the child continues to harm others, the parents should be called to get the child immediately. In a church setting, the parents should be found, even if they are in the middle of the worship service. You will need to make sure that you have the support of your pastor and church leadership on this.

This is important for the child to know what kind of behavior is acceptable in the teaching setting. It is important so the parents know that you are not providing a baby-sitting service. It is important so the other children have an environment conducive to learning. And on top of it all, quick action may avoid lawsuits that might come as a result of children being hurt.

Be sure the child and his parents know he is welcome back if he can behave.
